Pharmocotypes with in the schizophrenias This lecture introduces the concept of ‘pharmacotype.’ Pharmacotype is a word I coined to describe a subtype of illness that can be defined based on its pattern of medication response. I’ll argue that there are at least 4 (possibly 5) distinct pharmacotypes within the modern diagnosis of schizophrenia. The most common pharmacotype should be called ‘dopamine psychosis’ since it is defined by rapid and robust response to drugs that turn down the brain’s dopamine signals. Other pharmacotypes will probably eventually map to ‘inflammatory psychosis’ and to ‘glutamate psychosis.’ These pharmacotypes are characterized, in part, by poor response to dopamine-regulating treatments. They respond better to other types of care. This lecture is part of Northeast Ohio University's education(+)consultation service, SZconsult.
