Matthew Platt from Workshop Heaven (http://www.workshopheaven.com) presents the first in a series about saw sharpening. In this episode: rake, fleam and slope. Sharpening saws is no more difficult to master than sharpening chisels, it's just different. Selecting the correct file for the job is the first step, so all of ours are listed with the range of pitches (number of teeth per inch) that they are appropriate for. A proper saw sharpening file (http://www.workshopheaven.com/tools/S...) has slightly radiused corners that produce a rounded gullet between the teeth - this greatly increases strength of the teeth, not dissimilar from the structural advantage inferred by the flare at the base of the eiffel tower. They will wear out eventually, so we recommend keeping your newest file for 'best', i.e. only using it for the final light finishing pass, and then gradually relegate them over time.
