This channel is about Whitby and its the local villages, concentrating on the old and new and the changes over the years. There will be walks with a bit of history thrown in. Some walks will take you to parts of Whitby you would not previously notice or even know about. There are many alleyways and yards in Whitby where people rarely tread and we'll be showing them too. This quick stroll takes you from the ancient thoroughfare of Haggersgate, up Bakehouse Yard, via the archway next to the Star Inn, exiting on Cliff St. The yard is named after a Bakehouse on Cliff St. The Bakehouses served as ovens for the inhabitants of the cottages on the yard who had no stoves of their own. Prepared pies would be taken to the bakehouse for cooking. Each household would mark their pies with an identifiable cypher, often a shaped piece of pastry attached to the top. To this day many baked pies include such markers - a throwback to the old bakehouses. Along the way we pass the site of the Yard's water pump which was the source of water for the whole yard well into the 20th century. The yard was once the site of a significant church in the town, but is now completely erased. One of Whitby's most eminent men, George Young, was the Minister here for 42 years. During that time he wrote a two volume history of Whitby, as well as books on botany, geology and Captain Cook. In his spare time he published geological surveys and was instrumental in setting up the Whitby Literal and Philosophical Society - what a guy! Another of Whitby's more famous sons, Henry Freeman lived at the end of the yard. A plaque outlining his legendary story is fixed to the wall of his old house and is shown in the video. The video ends at the location of Whitby's first theatre now the location of one of the most attractive houses in Whitby, a house deserving a video of its own.
