Here's the next episode of Scales & Tales with part two of 'Minor Scale Mastery.' This time we're tackling a concept I've used with students for 15+ years which I call "modal drones." This idea utilizes droning the open low-E string to help your ear hear the tonality and overall flavor of the three minor family modes we looked at in part one of this series, but this time we're hitting them again and have changed the key again as well to mix things up. To begin, we're exploring one-octave "modal drone" fingerings for Dorian, Phrygian, and Aeolian in the key of E minor, and also introduce the unique minor-family flavors of harmonic and melodic minor too. Once you have the basic one-octave fingerings and sounds in your head of each scale, the next step involves altering these scales (and this concept) into two-octave fingerings, which is also revealed in this lesson and will greatly expand the range of notes and sound of each droned modal scale. Give this lesson a view and experiment with this idea to see if your ear develops a better "view" of the way these important scales sound and interact/relate to each other. Note that we're using Aeolian as a "parent scale" (or guide) to help compare the scales and visually notice the alterations/changes that occur as you move from scale-to-scale.
