Snak the Show (Eps. 310) - with Bonnie Anderson, Andrea Lyons & Jorge Molina. snak@snaktheshow.com ___________________________ Fred Penner Mr. Dress up. The Friendly Giant. Captain Kangaroo. Saturday morning cartoons. The Saturday morning cartoon thing. To get up at like 6 or 6:30. The TV room was ours until 12. We had to keep TV low because we couldn't wake my father at all. It was the only time you could do it. That was it. They show a clip of Fred Penner's place. Skipping over the stream and there's like a cow. He's got a backpack. And a cross through that little log and it's like, he's right there. Four Juno Awards. Fred penner's Place, single Fred, where in the world, hear the music. He's also a member of the Order of Canada. And he has an Order of Manitoba. He's a spokesman for UNESCO and UNICEF and the National Conference on Down Syndrome. His tag line is always "take care of each other." Mr. Fred Penner. Yaaaaay!! Thanks so much for being here. You've talked with some pretty wonderful people. It's a lovely lineup you've had. It's a pleasure to be included in this. Thank you. Oh thank you. How did you pick this direction. Was there something, a spark when you were a kid? Oh sure. Of course. I was surrounded by music. My parents loved classical music swing music. And then my older brother and sister they were into the music of the 50s. I had this really interesting combination of sounds. One of the real turning points of my appreciation of the value of Music. My sister Susie who was born with Down Syndrome would listen to classical songs, or the soundtrack of the West Side Story. She would just get to the point of Tears. Music was the one thing that really made a difference in my being. So I started playing lounges, bars, anywhere I could. They show a pic of his early band the New Folk Trio. There it is. It's my first band. Marty Robson on the left, Dave Pascoe on the right and Freddy in the middle. That's the New Folk Trio. From 1960 something. Oh wow I love it. This was shot in Ottawa in 1976. They play a clip of the band Kornstock. It was a band called Kornstock Comedy Troupe. We toured for 4 to 5 years in the 70s. The Cat Came Back. You performed that song on The Elephant Show. I have that. Let's watch that. What?!?!. Sure. They play a clip from The Elephant Show. That performance lead you to get your own television show. In a way. CBC, unbeknownst to me, were watching my work. Dodie Robb, the head of children's, called me out of the blue. Would you like to do replacement for the Friendly Giant? What do you want me to do? And Dodie said what do you want to do? They show a clip of Fred penner's place. That's fantastic. You've been doing some charity work too. They show a clip of a special concert for special school. Must be so joyous for you to see all these little faces so happy. Truly. Send me back your song. That really came from the sixties. I'm an old hippie right. And that generation was sing along, participation. Do you have anything coming up? People can go to www.FredPenner.com. My touring schedule is there. What a pleasure speaking with the three of you thank you. Mr. Fred Penner thank you so much. Thank you so much. Thank you and take good care of each other. That was great. That was awesome. What a lovely lovely man. Like share comment and subscribe. Take good care of each other. I'm so glad he did that. I was dying.
