Episode 813 Hilda (Jean Alexander) continues to press Stan (Bernard Youens) about where he was on the night Steve (Paul Maxwell) died. Elsie (Pat Phoenix) is worried when Val (Anne Reid) admits she couldn’t lie to provide her with an alibi. Elsie seeks out Castle (Hugh Cross) to apologise for involving Val. Castle tells her Steve has left everything to her in his will, though Elsie swears she had no idea. Len (Peter Adamson) tells Elsie the police traced his cab to Claydon Court, took his fingerprints, and questioned him about their relationship. Len confesses that he might well have killed Steve — for her sake. Ena (Violet Carson) becomes curious about why Minnie (Margot Bryant) slips away at 1:30 p.m. each afternoon. Jack (Arthur Leslie) dislikes the oversized cardigan Annie (Doris Speed) has knitted for him and tries to pass it on to someone else. Castle begins looking into whether Elsie had been short of money. While Dot (Joan Francis) is out of the room, Gregg (Bill Nagy) tells Castle he was with a woman named Sally Wells in Altrincham when Steve died. Stan tells Hilda he knew about her flirtation with George Greenwood (Arthur Pentelow) back in January, before admitting that he was with his lady friend from 19 Inkerman Street the night Steve died. Hilda is furious and demands they swap jobs the next day to keep him out of temptation. The detectives approach Len and ask him to return to the station for further questioning.
