This is the loving documentation of the beach service and surfer's paddle out (organized by Ian Masterson) at Waimea Bay on Oahu for one of surfing's giant luminaries, Fred Van Dyke. This video is not meant as a slick television presentation. It is intended solely to bring people to the event that were not otherwise able to attend. The day was absolutely beautiful. A brightly lighted beach and ocean made it difficult for the automatic light meter on the camera to see what amounted to a silouhetted speaker podium. Please bare with the grainy aspect of some of the video. We are also extremely grateful for some of the additional historic pictures in this video taken by Don James, Ron Church, John Severson, Surfer and Surfing magazine. This video is not intended for profit in anyway and should not be used for that purpose. Fred Van Dyke was a highly influential 1950s and 1960s big wave surfer and Punahou School teacher who was years ahead of his time in convincing his students about the value of not smoking and of maintaining a healthy diet with physical activity. Indirectly he is credited in my family with getting me to have my mother quit smoking in about 1963. We thank him for that. If you have any personal stories, please feel to add them in the comment section of this video area. Thank you to Bill Brooks for the use of his music on this video. Thank you to the lovely family of young ladies who sang the opening and closing song on this video. I did not get their names, but their voices were like angels who had come to Waimea Bay to be sure Fred was okay.
