Are you starting to play chess in Ireland? Do you want to know about and find Irish chess clubs, chess tournaments you can play, and how can you register? Chess Dad provides some support by showing you around the Irish chess landscape and its main information board, the Irish Chess Union website, link https://www.icu.ie/ 00:00 Starting chess in Ireland? 00:47 ICU.ie 01:52 Find a chess club 02:52 Find a tournament to play 05:37 Open or sections 09:11 Register to play 10:44 ICU membership 12:52 ICU rating 15:31 Say hi Some of the chess lingo there you might not be able to understand, but no worries, I explain it all in plain English. If I missed something, reach out in comments, and I will happily cover it. If you want to find a chess club in your neighbourhood, ICU site makes it easy, as you can filter by province, county or city. There are data on the club night timing, and contact info, so you can reach out. If this is about the little ones, you can also check whether the club has junior section, so your child is not met only by a group of 50- year-olds. Chess tournaments are the best part of chess, and you can’t call yourself a chess player if you haven’t tried one of these. ICU calendar includes them all, and it is sorted by date – you can find is there something in your area when you are available. Some tournaments are called Open. Anyone can participate, and all players play in one section. It is not my favourite model, as many games you play against much weaker or much stronger opponents. I prefer the section-based model, used by most Irish tournaments. According to their rating, players are placed into the relevant session. Usual sections are Challengers, Majors, Championships and Masters. Beginners should start with the Challenger section. It is easy to register online for the tournaments also via Irish Chess Union website. In the video, I cover a few questions you might face when you are registering. I cover the walk in option, which does exist but is becoming riskier lately. In 2025 I noticed a few tournaments that were full and had a waiting list days before the event. Some tournaments might insist that only ICU members can participate. It is the same with chess leagues. I cover how to sort out the ICU membership, and the subscription fee. I talk a bit about the ICU rating and why is it needed, when international chess federation FIDE has their own international ratings. ICU rating system is pretty good, and it catches up with you playing strength quicker than the FIDE rating does. K factor I don’t talk here, I will cover it soon in the FIDE rating video. It is simply a development factor, the younger and less experienced player you are, the higher it is! If you are watching this an you see me around at any of the events, please come and say hi!
