When I started as a novice chess parent, I had never played competitive chess myself. My children accidentally learned chess (yes, believe it or not – a long story to tell another time) and drew me into the world of weekend tournaments and chess leagues. It took me two years to figure out the chess world basics. More than a decade later, my youngest is going through familiar early steps of her chess career. And I see how other chess parent newbies are struggling with the whole thing. 13 years have passed since I was drawn into the chess world. Since then, I started playing myself, and achieved a decent rating, above 1800 FIDE in 2025. In fact, I just won my first tournament ever few weeks ago. I am also a FIDE licensed chess coach. But above all, a chess parent whose 3 children started in 2 different countries and then played in 3 continents in 15 countries. I decided to become Chess Dad, because I want to help absolute beginners figure out the chess landscape. Why would you play chess? Why do all world superpowers have chess in schools? Discover chess benefits for all ages with Chess Dad. The beautiful game has so much to offer, no matter whether you are 8 or 80 years old.
