Nottingham based Billy Merrin was one of the most popular provincial bandleaders. His recording career lasted from 1932 until 1937. He initially appeared on Decca and transferred to their Panachord issue. He was subsequently seen briefly on the (black) Winner label as well as Regal-Zonophone and Sterno. In 1935 he signed for Crystalate and towards the end of the year appeared on their budget Crown label. "Goody Goody" a popular tune of 1936 and produced six British dance band versions. This recording marks the first appearance of Rita Williams with the band, shortly before her sixteenth birthday. As always, Billy Merrin produced lively performances and his popularity should have meant a longer recording career than five years. Here he is towards the end of his recording era. Recorded 29th May 1936 Vocal chorus by Rita Williams ** Transfer and video by Jonathan Holmes **
