The sensation of striking the ball first, out of the centre of the club face, then taking a small divot after the ball is the pinnacle of ball striking that most golfers are searching for. To achieve this contact, there are a few things that need to be in place. One of those is SHAFT LEAN, where the shaft of the golf club is angled slightly towards the target at the point of impact. And at the same time, placing same stress, or pressure, on the back side of the shaft via the trail hand is also something great ball strikers are doing to ensure they attain the desired shaft lean, and solid contact, every time! In a recent lesson, a student shared with me his “FEEL” for achieving this optimal impact position with the analogy of “STRIKING A MATCH”. 🔥 We’d been working on improving his club delivery, as he tended to flip the club head past his hands prior to impact, and would struggle to achieve any sort of downward angle of attack - effectively, he was ‘scooping’ the ball up into the air resulting in lots of contact that was low on the club face (thin), and a much higher ball flight than he wanted that was leading to a loss of distance.
