Max Bear Jr., 88, discusses Nancy Culp. Born on December, Max Bayer Jr. 4-37 in Oakland, California. The legend of Max Bear Jr. was almost inevitable. His father, Max Bear, Senior, was the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion from 1934 to 1935. With a dynamic and volatile personality, his popularity overshadowed the family name. While growing up in the shadow of a prominent figure, Bayer Jr. gained confidence and a thorough understanding of the pressures of public attention. Athletic, beautiful, and personable, Bayer Jr. initially possessed star potential. He studied philosophy at Santa Clara University and excelled in sports like golf and boxing. Although he never pursued professional athletics. He chose acting due to the creative opportunities in film and television during the postwar boom. In the late 1950s, Hollywood sought young talent, and Bear Jr. suited the bill. His early playing career included tiny but consistent roles in TV shows including 77 Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eye, and Cheyenne. He had several cinematic appearances, but fate intervened in 1962, defining and complicating his career. Bayer Jr. played Jethro Bodin in Beverly Hillbillies, a comedy about a rural family discovering affluence and the Beverly Hills Society.
