Bennett Abhinav Chand; Department of Mathematics, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS USA Abstract: Machine learning is becoming a more common tool in developing mathematical models. Our students should be introduced to the strengths and weaknesses of machine learning techniques in modeling real-world situations. We will discuss an assignment in a first course in differential equations where students model a spring-mass system and use machine learning to determine the appropriate damping term, including having them think about the advantages and disadvantages of this approach.
