Sat | 4:00 PM–4:30 PM ET Frank Wattenberg; Department of Math Sciences (Emeritus), United States Military Academy, West Point, NY USA Abstract: The most consequential personal and public policy decisions we make involve multiple and often conflicting values and a deep, often cross-cultural, understanding of many stakeholders/actors. This session focuses on two things: First, the importance and role of the arts and humanities as well as the sciences and, second, the use of what we call mathematical modeling and scientists call the scientific method—the constant and iterative back-and-forth between modeling/theory on one hand and experimentation/observation on the other. As mathematician/scientists and as educators we have an opportunity and an obligation to develop the artist/scientist/humanist in each of our students and to develop their abilities to make better personal and public policy decisions—especially high stakes, often controversial decisions. This session will draw on and build on a wide base of work ranging from the work of Daniel Kahneman (Thinking, Fast and Slow) to the most recent work on artificial intelligence. Each of us and each of our students carries in their pockets more expressive, narrative and analytic power than the best-equipped artists and scientists did just a few decades ago. We will leverage this power with classroom-ready resources, materials and practices. Our goal is to understand decision-making and make decisions that will better all our lives and the world that we all share. For more information, visit https://qubeshub.org/community/groups...
