SoMAS - The Subseasonal and Seasonal Variability of the Northern Hemisphere Midlatitudes

Professor Cristiana Stan from George Mason University speaks to SoMAS at the Topics in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences seminar on February 11, 2026 on the topic "The Subseasonal and Seasonal Variability of the Northern Hemisphere Mid-Latitudes" Abstract: Recent advancements in understanding the subseasonal and seasonal variability outside of the tropics will be discussed. I will introduce the multi-channel singular spectral analysis (MSSA) method used to isolate the variability in the extra-tropics, present the oscillatory modes dominating the extra-tropics on these time scales and their relationship with tropical variability, and discuss the implications of midlatitude oscillatory modes for the predictability of surface air temperature (T2m) at subseasonal-to seasonal timescales.
