Engine 557 Restoration Company Reconditioning the Superheater Header In order that no steam leaks from the joint between the superheater units and the superheater header, each seat in the header needs to be reconditioned. The seats are a conical (45 degree) shape into which the superheater units "ball" seat in clamped. Each seat needs to be polished smooth without any pits or scratches. This is achieved using a mandrel cut to the proper shape in a handheld drill motor. Successive passes are made, first with a fine sandpaper, then with lapping compound. There are 60 seats, and each takes a considerable amount of time and effort. In this video 557 volunteer Frankie curls himself up in the smokebox and polishes one of the seats. This work is hard on the arms and shoulders. If you'd like to support the restoration of 557 you can donate at: https://www.alaskarails.org/pix/forme...
