Brownells Gun Techs and avid firearm history geeks Steve Ostrem and Keith Ford return to Rock Island Auction Company to show us a real rarity: a Remington Model 16 autoloading rifle in .22 Remington Automatic. Also called ".22 Rem Auto," this rimfire cartridge is true Unobtanium nowadays. The gun itself is an exquisite blued-steel-and-wood creation with a slim, sleek receiver, and a magazine tube that loads from a port in the stock. It has an elegantly simple takedown mechanism, which Steve demonstrates. The Model 16 was Remington's answer to the Winchester Model 1903, also chambered in a long-obsolete cartridge, the .22 Winchester Automatic. The reason for the proprietary cartridges instead of standard .22 LR? To prevent shooters from using black powder ammo, which would foul the early autoloading mechanisms. Since .22 Rem Auto was loaded ONLY with smokeless powder, Rock Island's Model 16 is in superb condition with virtually no corrosion. Its value is further enhanced by the neatly checkered walnut stock and beautifully engraved receiver. The Remington Model 16 wasn't around for very long; production ran from about 1914 to 1928.
