Hi, I’m Jill, and welcome to American English. In the last lesson, we talked about polite ways Americans ask for help. Now, let’s talk about how Americans say no politely. When Americans say no, they usually try to sound kind and calm. Listen first. “No, thank you.” “I can’t.” Repeat after me. No, thank you. I can’t. Very common. More polite ways Americans say no. Repeat after me. “I can’t right now.” “Not today.” “Maybe another time.” These sound normal. These sound American. If you want to be extra polite, say this. Repeat after me. “I’m sorry, I can’t.” “I can’t right now, sorry.” At work. Listen. “Can you help me today?” “I can’t right now.” At the store. Listen. “Do you want a bag?” “No, thank you.” Seeing someone you know. Listen. “Do you want to come with us?” “Maybe another time.” Repeat after me. No, thank you. I can’t right now. Maybe another time. Repeat after me again. I’m sorry, I can’t. Not today. Maybe another time. In American English, you do not need a long explanation. A short, polite no is enough. When you say no, be calm and be kind. In the next lesson, we’ll talk about what Americans say to change the topic. I’ll see you next lesson.
