Hi, I’m Jill, and welcome to American English. In the last lesson, we talked about what Americans say when they are confused. Now, let’s talk about what Americans say when they’re surprised. When Americans are surprised, they usually react right away. Listen first. Oh my gosh! Wow! Repeat after me. Oh my gosh! Wow! Very common. More natural ways Americans show surprise. Repeat after me. No way! Really? You’re kidding! These sound excited. These sound American. At work. Listen. “I just got the job.” “Oh my gosh!” At the store. Listen. “That’s only five dollars.” “Wow!” Seeing someone you know. Listen. “We’re moving next week.” “No way!” Repeat after me. Oh my gosh! Wow! No way! Repeat after me again. Really? You’re kidding! No way! Important tip. In American English, we often use short reactions to show big feelings. You do not need a full sentence. Your voice shows the surprise. When something surprises you, react naturally and keep the conversation going. In the next lesson, we’ll talk about what Americans say when they’re excited or happy. I’ll see you next lesson.
