Elephant eating apple STORYLINE: A hippopotamus lost and feared dead during the flooding in the Czech capital, Prague, has turned up unharmed but bad-tempered after his ordeal, city zoo officials said on Sunday. Slavek, an 18-year-old male hippo, was carried up out of his enclosure by the flood waters earlier this week. Staff eventually found him on the second floor of a pavilion used to house elephants. While elated at the discovery, they had to be careful when approaching the animal as he was hungry and quite angry. With water levels receding, the zookeepers put out a trail of food to lure the hippo back down to ground level. And after long hours of desperate but untiring efforts, they finally managed to lure Slavek out of hiding into a corral. Apart from dealing with Slavek, zoo workers were on Sunday preparing to move three female elephants into their usual home later in the day. Sabi, Shanti and Gulab have been chained to trees since they were rescued from the ranging waters. Their 35-year old male companion Kadir had to be humanely killed because zoo officials were unable to transport him after he was stuck up to his ears in deep floodwaters. The zoo lies on the banks of the Vltava River, which caused the worst floods in the Czech Republic in 175 years. Zoo officials have been criticised for their handling of the floods, which killed dozens of animals, including 80 birds, Kadir the elephant, a gorilla, a lion and a bear. Two sea lions are still missing - one is reported to have already swum to neighbouring Germany.
