Week Seven: An Ecological Dynamic Approach to Player Development, A Season of Proof & Evidence Game Sims For The Long Term Wins – Developing Basketball I.Q & Decision Making As coaches, we often fall into the trap of over-coaching—treating players like chess pieces we control. However, to build resilient, high-IQ players, we must stop solving their problems and start creating environments where they solve them independently. The Approach: Special Situations Move away from rote 5-on-0 lines and use Game Simulations. Here is the blueprint we use at Knox Basketball: 1️⃣ Set the Scene: Provide the context (e.g., "7 seconds left, Blue down by 1, Red has 4 fouls. Sideline inbound. Go.") 2️⃣ Player-Led Huddle: Give teams 30 seconds. Players take the whiteboard to design the winning play or the defensive coverage. 3️⃣ Live Action: Let it play out. Do not stop the game for corrections. Allow the chaos. Why It Works Aligned with Basketball Immersion philosophies, this prioritizes decision-making over memorization. 🏀 Empowerment: When players design the play, they take ownership of the result. 🏀 Basketball IQ: Players learn time and score management organically, not from a textbook. 🏀 Representative Learning: They practice decisions in an environment that mirrors the game. The Debrief 💭 The learning happens after the buzzer. Avoid lecturing; instead, ask questions: "Why did you choose that entry?" or "Did you communicate the switch?" This forces players to reflect on their decisions, cementing the lesson. Coach’s Challenge 🫵 Dedicate the last 15 minutes of your next practice to Game Sims. Hand over the whiteboard and step back. It may look messy, but messy learning is sticky learning. Let’s build thinkers, not robots. #LiveLearnTeach
