In order to provide their own energy and heat, more and more operators of sewage treatment plants operate developed CHPs – combined heat and power plants – normally fed with biogas. The sludge from the sewage treatment plant is recycled and allowed to digest, to enable for biogas production. To optimise the biogas yield from the sewage sludge, the digestion tower for the digestion process is increasingly enriched with external carbon sources - this is also called co fermentation. These sources include grease/water mixtures from grease separators, commercial kitchens, fish and meat plants as well as oil mills and chocolate factories: All these are delivered in vacuum tankers or trucks. Many operators use conventional electromagnetic flowmeters (EMF´s) for billing the amount of grease delivered and the subsequent loading of the digestion tower. However, the grease/water mixture leaves large fat deposits, especially on the inside of the pipe walls. As a result, the electrodes on these conventional magnetic flowmeters became clogged, which in turn led to inaccurate readings. This meant that the EMFs sometimes displayed a flow rate even during downtime. Transparent billing and any further optimisation of co-fermentation was not possible with these meters. The electromagnetic flowmeter OPTIFLUX 7300 has large-area, non-wetted electrodes installed behind the liner that use capacitive signal pick-up. The signal pick up between the product and the electrode is thus not affected by any fat deposits. In contrast to conventional electromagnetic flowmeters, the OPTIFLUX 7300 guarantees long-term stable measurement of the grease mixture: measurement errors such as those that occurred with the older conventional devices are overcome. This means that the delivered grease quantities can be billed accurately and the dosing process can be designed efficiently giving the best possible gas yield.
