A brief video covering the history and construction of the gehu (革胡), a Chinese 4-stringed bass bowed string instrument with python skin covering the right side of the resonator, which was developed by Yang Yusen (杨雨森, 1926-1980) in 1958 to replace the cello in modern traditional Chinese orchestras. Although its cylindrical resonator has a very different shape from that of the cello, the gehu essentially imitates the cello in terms of its structure, principles of sound production, tuning, and playing technique. The discussion includes little-known information about the instrument's internal structure (and footage thereof), which includes an intricate wooden device that transmits sound from the instrument's bridge to its python-skin resonator. At the end of the video, brief audio demonstrations of two specimens of diyin gehu (低音革胡), the contrabass form of the gehu, tuned EADG (like a double bass) are presented. Filmed at the National Quintessence Huqin Art Collection Hall (Chinese: Guocui Huqin Yishu Shoucang Guan, 国粹胡琴艺术收藏馆) in the Minhang District of Shanghai, China, c. July 12, 2021. The name of the man on the left (wearing a green shirt) is Jiang Guocui (蒋国粹), the collection's curator. The man on the right (wearing a checked shirt), who appears to have been a friend of Yang Yusen, is named Mr. Chen (陈先生). Thanks to Mr. Lin Chiang-san (林江山) for additional information about this video. 【革胡】【二胡】居然有人说革胡就是照抄了大提琴?图样图森破!内部结构解剖给你看!
