It also pushed me to ask myself: Could I create a series of piano medley tributes for him, using the musical language I know best? This Piano Cover Mix is the very first answer to that question — and certainly not the last. This time, I chose two globally beloved English classics. “Heal The World” appeared on the 1991 album Dangerous. Michael once said it was one of the songs he was most proud of. Amid the Gulf War, devastated by the suffering — especially the suffering of children — he wrote this song as a plea for compassion. Its music video, filled with the faces of children in conflict zones, is heartbreaking yet profoundly comforting through its warm melody. “Longer,” by American folk poet-singer Dan Fogelberg, comes from his 1979 album Phoenix. With only gentle guitar, a tender voice, and poetic imagery, the song became an enduring wedding classic that time can hardly surpass. Yet when I listen to “Longer,” I don’t think of romantic love. I hear the love of the universe — of nature — or even of God Himself. Its verses of oceans and forests, birds and fish, rain, fire, and the love that predates them all feel like the Creator’s timeless affection toward the world. I believe the “place in your heart filled with love” that Michael sings of in “Heal The World” is the same innate reverence we humans have for life and nature. And astonishingly, the two songs share an almost identical chord motion: both moving upward by a third, then returning downward by a third — as if to remind us that while humanity expands, reaches, and grows proud (moving upward), we must also stay humble and find our way back to the love that grounds us (moving downward). Music truly is the universal language that calls for peace. In my arrangement, I wove “Longer” between sections of “Heal The World,” placing the same Longer verse at both the beginning and the ending — to symbolize that the power to heal the world always comes from the oldest, deepest kind of love. There is only one section where both songs overlap. I designed it this way because: In “Longer,” that verse originally describes lovers aging together, their “book of life” weathered with cracks and yellowed pages, yet their love remains steady. But within the context of “Heal The World,” the imagery shifts — it becomes the portrait of a world aged and wounded by war and environmental damage, yet the love we hold for nature and humanity continues to glow, soft but unextinguished. I also kept Michael’s powerful triple modulation exactly as in the original, and subtly adjusted the Chinese subtitles each time it appears — moving from “healing” to “saving,” from “caring” to “acknowledging” lives that have been lost — a reminder of the urgency of peace, environmental care, and protection of children and life itself. This piece is my tribute to Michael Jackson and Dan Fogelberg — two artists who devoted their music to the dream of a better world. Up next, I will take on another Michael song that comforts the lonely and the hurting: “You Are Not Alone.” Stay tuned to see what I will pair it with.
