Sideways on a Donkey: A Nativity Illumination Workshop

Following on from the Nativity illumination workshop held in December 2023 and the Noble Horse illumination workshop we held at the Cheiron conference in September 2024, the journal team organised another practice-based event. During this virtual illumination workshop, we focused on the flight to Egypt, where the Virgin is usually represented riding sideways on the back of the donkey. At the centre of the discussion was the equipment used for the ride (as much of it as the illuminator chose to show). The theoretical part was followed by a demonstration of "illumination for dummies," or how to copy a medieval miniature without possessing exceptional talents or expensive materials.
