On the dawn of the last full day of our vacation on August 15th, I decided to make up for my lack of morning shots by foregoing breakfast at the Station Inn to break off from the group and head over to South Fork solo. It looked as if my initiative would be rewarded - a thick blanket of fog left the ground clear but shrouded the mountaintops in mist. After a fuel stop at Sheetz, I was spurred on by visions of eastbounds lit by the morning sun, charging upgrade against a backdrop of fog-covered mountaintops. It was going to be a very good morning...sort of. Upon arriving at South Fork I was greeted by deafening silence on both the rails and the scanner. The only sounds to disturb the quiet were a barking dog in the distance and an occasional passing car on Route 53. At least I could enjoy my breakfast in relative peace, but I did so while helplessly watching the photogenic fog burn away with no trains to pass under it. Finally, at a quarter to 9 I heard the sound of an approaching train, albeit from the east. The fog still covered the mountains over Ehrenfeld as 11K slowly passed in review to the sound of roaring dynamics from SD40Es 6331 and 6307, SD70M 2616, and SD60 6698. To the west, only a few wisps of fog remained. A few minutes after the train came to a stop, the 6331 and 6307 returned east on track 2, and 11K resumed its journey. It did not do so completely without assistance, however, as SD40Es 6316 and 6300 remained on the rear. The silence was back, but not for too long. At 9:18, another westbound (whose symbol managed to escape me) sailed downgrade behind C44-9W 9861, ES44DC 7507, and SD70M-2 2646, with SD40Es 6322 and 6328 bringing up the rear. Ten minutes later, SD40Es 6326 and 6305 took advantage of the intermission to run light westbound. By 9:47 no trace of the fog remained, but as a consolation prize there was a small splash of color as stack train 25Z passed by with ex-Union Pacific SD90MAC 7240 leading, wearing the remnants of its former owner's yellow-and-gray scheme, trailed by C44-9Ws 9280 and 8908 in workaday black. With no eastbounds on the radar, it was time to rejoin the crowd. #train #trainspotting #railfanning #railroad #pennsylvania #travel
