During the Catch Welfare Platform Conference in IJmuiden (November 2025), VeriFish interviewed key actors shaping the future of fisheries and aquaculture sustainability. In this first episode of Voices Behind the Indicators, Christine Xu, Head of Fisheries Welfare at Aquatic Life Institute, explains why aquatic animal welfare remains one of the most overlooked aspects of seafood production. Each year, around 100 billion fish are farmed and between 2–3 trillion are caught in the wild for human consumption. Despite these numbers, welfare data is rarely integrated into sustainability reporting frameworks. Christine discusses how science-based welfare solutions can be translated into policy and industry practice, and how platforms like VeriFish enable companies to report environmental, nutritional, and welfare data together in a transparent, data-driven way. Welfare is no longer an afterthought. It is part of responsible seafood governance.
