When you spend decades raising children, you never imagine what life will feel like when they grow up and the house finally becomes quiet. Today I’m sharing something deeply personal: what it’s really like learning my new role as a parent to adult children, how it changed me, and how this shift played a big part in my decision to start a new chapter here in Japan. I loved every moment of being a hands-on mum to my two boys — the weekend sports, driving lessons, late-night snacks, and the noise and chaos of family life. But when my sons became adults, everything shifted. Parenting doesn’t end… but it becomes long-distance. Softer. A different kind of love. And no one really talks about how big and emotional that transition feels. In this video, I reflect on that change, the pride and the heartbreak, the quiet moments, and the rediscovery of myself as a woman in her 50s who suddenly had space to think about her own life again. Moving to Japan wasn’t an escape — it was the beginning of a new role, a new identity, and a new season of life I never expected. If you're navigating middle age, becoming an empty nester, or simply wondering who you are outside of motherhood, I hope this video makes you feel understood. We’re all finding our way through this chapter together. 💛 Thank you for being here on this journey with me. 👇 Join me on the journey ✨ Postcard Club (seasonal postcards from Japan): http://ko-fi.com/chanijapan/tiers ✨ My Merch – “Life is Journey” collection: https://chani-japan-shop.fourthwall.com/ ✨ Learn Japanese with me – Beginner Courses & Hiragana/Katakana: https://www.chanijapan.com/ I look forward to seeing you in the next video 😀 @ChaniJapan
