MRUV 149: Two Scrap Steel Loads for Gondolas

Following up on the two hour gondola weathering video: I post for your viewing pleasure how I made two scrap steel loads for these cars. I had a bunch of cool, steelish/scrapy looking pieces from the Central Valley bridge I build ages ago. I treated them with the two part Rust Antiquing set I demonstrated in the gondola weathering video. I simply placed them on some dunnage- wood RR ties, that looked acceptable to me. I also wrapped some Berkshire heavy EZ Line around in a few places as strapping. The rusting looked pretty good so all I did to the loads was hit the EZ line with some Vallejo Dark Rust wash, just to tone it down a touch. I made the loads removable so I can run the cars either loaded or empty. The inside of the Accurail car was left alone- it looked okay and if I did too much it would interfere with the load. On the Walthers car I did carefully add some small pieces of scrap, dunnage and tools. I then added some Vallejo pigments and secured them with Pigment Binder. This was to simulate the left over gunk and debris that seems to litter the bottom of many gondolas. The Vallejo pigments I used are: -Brown Iron Oxide #73.108 -Burnt Umber #73.110 -Natural Iron Oxide #73.115 -Pigment Binder #26.233 I also went over the RR ties with some Vallejo washes, to tone done the dark brown color: -Desert Dust #76.522 -Blue Grey #76.524 That wraps up these two cars. Maybe I will build that Westerfield Reading Gon...at least it is a more accurate car than the Walthers or Accurail ones. Thank you for watching.
