(13 Apr 2018) The Russian Ambassador to the UK said on Friday that the Civil Defence search-and-rescue group in Syria, also known as the White Helmets, are "famous for staging fake chemical attacks". Alexander Vladimirovich Yakovenko, who was addressing a news conference at the Russian Embassy in London, was responding to a question about alleged recent chemical attacks in Syria. On Thursday French President Emmanuel Macron said he has proof that Syrian President Bashar Assad's government was behind chlorine attacks in recent days. With regard to growing tensions between Russia and the US following the alleged attacks, Yakovenko said that the Russian military was talking to the US military and quoted Russian President Vladimir Putin as saying he hopes "common sense will prevail." Yakovenko also questioned media activity in the UK, asking if anybody had seen or heard from Sergei and Yulia Skripal - who were said to have been poisoned on March 4th in the English town of Salisbury. Yulia Skripal, 33, was released from the hospital this week. Her father remains hospitalised but British health officials say he is improving. Russia has charged that British officials were keeping Skripal's daughter in isolation. It demanded access to her and prodded Britain to share evidence in the case. Yakovenko reiterated that Russia was not behind the poisoning and said that it wished to investigate the case. He further reiterated that Russia had never produced or stored the nerve agent known as Novichok. Investigators at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons have confirmed British findings that the Skripals were poisoned with a military-grade nerve agent. But it didn't say who was responsible for the poisoning.
