Walk and Drive Tour exploring Darwin's northern area of the Casuarina Coastal Reserve and surrounding suburbs. We begin the drive from the suburb of Anula and pass by Casuarina Shopping Centre. We visit Lee Point Beach and Buffalo Creek then drive through the suburbs of Lyons and Tiwi towards the Dripstone Cliffs and Casuarina Beach. LYONS Lyons is a northern suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. It is the traditional lands and waterways of the Larrakia people. Prior to gazettal on 7 July 2004, the area comprising Lyons was part of the suburb of Lee Point, Northern Territory. Lyons is a new suburb with new estates being built to the west. ANULA Anula is a Northern suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The suburb lies to the east of Lee Point Road and to the north of McMillans Road and covers an area of 1.318 km2 (0.509 sq mi). It is on the traditional Country and waterways of the Larrakia people. The suburb lies to the north of Darwin International Airport which is also known as RAAF Base Darwin. The streets in Anula are named after early NT Mines and mineral fields. Names such as Spring Hill Street, Caledonian Street, Wolfram Court and Zapopan Court being but a few examples. CASUARINA COASTAL RESERVE Casuarina Coastal Reserve has kilometres of unspoilt beaches with endless views of the beautiful coastline. Fringed by dramatic cliffs and sweeping casuarina trees, it's an ideal spot for a picnic, a game of beach cricket or to watch the Territory sun slip over the horizon at dusk. Depending on the time of year, you might see wading and migratory birds or nesting turtles on the beach. Heritage listed ruins from World War II are scattered through the reserve. There's a nudist zone on the beach north of Darriba Road. It is illegal to be nude outside this zone. It is also a significant site for the Larrakia people. Darriba Nunggalinya or Old Man Rock can be seen at low tide. You should not disturb Old Man Rock in any way or remove shellfish. DARWIN Darwin is the capital of Australia's Northern Territory and a former frontier outpost. It's also a gateway to massive Kakadu National Park. Its popular waterfront area has several beaches and green areas like Bicentennial Park. Also near the water is the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, displaying Southeast Asian and Pacific art, plus a pearling lugger and other seafaring vessels. DRIPSTONE CLIFFS Part of the Casurina Coastal Reserve, Dripstone Cliffs jut up from the pristine sands of the beach. Home to several WW2 ruins; three concrete observation posts built into the top of Dripstone Cliffs were part of a number of observation posts constructed around Darwin from 1939. The posts formed part of a coastal defence strategy developed to help defend Darwin, in anticipation of a sea and land based invasion by the Japanese during WWII. CASUARINA Casuarina is one of the northern suburbs of Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory of Australia. It is the traditional country and waterways of the Larrakia people.[3] It is home to the largest shopping centre in the Northern Territory, called Casuarina Square.
