Really interesting conversation between two high-profile, passionate and articulate advocates of the sustainable architecture movement. How can we build better? Joe Jack and Oliver bounce off each providing insights and thoughts on how bio-based materials such as timber can be adopted quicker, the role of architects in convincing clients, developers and stake-holders to embrace these materials, and the balance of embodied carbon and operational carbon, while all the while advocating outcomes over reports and progress over more legislation. Oliver is an architect and co-founder of Ackroyd Lowrie, as well as a podcaster (Urban Forecast). Previous to this, he spent 10 years learning his trade at Architype, where he was responsible for developing a modular, timber-framed construction system that was used by several London Boroughs to deliver new Primary Schools and Nurseries. Joe Jack is Head of Sustainability at Bywater Properties. Previously he was an Associate and researcher at FCBStudios. He's a Certified Passivhaus Consultant. He led the development of FCBSCarbon, a tool which estimates the whole life carbon of a building to inform design decisions prior to detailed design. He has taught at a number of universities in the UK, including Oxford Brookes, UCL, UWE, University of Bath, and London Met, and is part of core research groups within Architects Declare, CIBSE and LETI.
