It can be a big step to visit a therapist for the first time – and you may wonder what will happen at your initial session. While every therapist will have their own way of starting therapy with a new client, there are some things that will always be covered in the first session. Your first session is a chance for you to make sure you feel comfortable with your therapist, and for them to check they have the skills and expertise to support you. It will include introductions, contracting and a chance for you to tell your story and explain the problems you’re experiencing. In this short film, our member Dr Mish Seabrook gives a flavour of what to expect from your first therapy session and highlights some of the key things she thinks it’s important for new clients to know when they start therapy.
