Shortly after the birth of the Japanese Type 38 Carbine, Japan introduced the Type 44 Carbine in 1911 with its very substantial integrated bayonet and distinctive housing. Much like the Russian M44 (who’s similar name is purely coincidental) it had a bayonet that needed nothing else to deploy as a fully functioning cruciform weapon than the simple push of a button. The russian example, however, was a product of late WWII production in 1944 while the Japanese Type 44 was a pre WWI weapon leading one to believe the Russians might have been influenced.....after all, they DID have some experience with Arisaka rifles bought from Japan during WWI......was that name really a coincidence?
