The Ummah That Fears Allah Will Be Granted Victory Allah says in Surah Al Imraan, in translation: “Those to whom people said, ‘Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.’ But it only increased them in faith, and they said, ‘Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.’ So, they returned with Favor from Allah and bounty, no harm touching them. And they pursued the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is of immense bounty.” Allah also says in Surah Al Imraan “Indeed, that is Satan frightening his allies; so do not fear them but fear Me if you are believers.” Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet ﷺ said on the authority of Allah: “By My Might, I do not place two fears upon My servant, nor two securities. If he feels secure from Me in this world, I will make him fearful on the Day of Judgment; and if he fears Me in this world, I will grant him security on the Day of Judgment.” So we can see here that Allah commanded His servants to fear Him and made it a condition of faith. Allah also praises those who fear Him, saying in surah Al Muminoon in translation: “Indeed, those who fear their Lord, who believe in His signs, do not associate partners with their Lord, and give what they give while their hearts are full of fear—they are returning to their Lord. They hasten to do good deeds, and they are foremost in them.” And Allah says in surah Al Rahman translation: “For whoever fears the standing before his Lord, there are two gardens.” The one who fears Allah knows that Allah will question him about his brothers and is keen to support and pray for them. Whoever fears Allah in his heart helps his brothers in Gaza and wherever the oppressed are, standing for the truth, fully aware of his accountability before Allah for every oppressed person. You see dear brothers and sisters, fear is the whip that drives the soul toward Allah and the Hereafter. Without it, a person becomes complacent, relying on Allah’s mercy alone. The early scholars said: “Fear is Allah’s whip that keeps the stray away from His door; any heart that loses fear is ruined.” And they also say “People remain on the right path as long as fear is in their hearts; when fear departs, they go astray.” So a servant should combine love, fear, and hope in his devotion to Allah. The heart is like a bird on the journey to Allah: Its head is love and it’s wings are fear and hope. Those who rely on one without the others deviate: because worshipping Allah with love alone is heresy. Worshipping Allah with fear alone is extremist. Worshipping Allah with hope alone is negligence. But combining all three makes the believer a true monotheist. Know also, that there are several levels of fear. Praised fear: prevents sin and leads to obedience. Obligatory fear: drives one to perform duties and avoid prohibited acts. Recommended fear: motivates voluntary acts of worship and Forbidden fear: causes despair, sickness, or abandonment of good deeds. So the More One Knows Allah, the More One Fears Him. Allah says in surah Fatir in translation: “Indeed, those who fear Allah are among His scholars.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much; and you would not delight in women on beds, but would climb the heights calling to Allah.” To give examples of fearing Allah, let us consider the companions may Allah be pleased with them all. Abu Bakr used to say: “I wish I were but a hair in the side of a believing servant.” Umar would faint upon hearing the Qur’an due to fear of Allah. Uthman wept at graves until his beard was soaked and Tamim al-Dari: repeated the ayah “Evil is what they judge” (Quran 45:21) all night, weeping. If we look at the Quran to understand fear we find many entries. Allah says: “And Allah warns you of Himself.”; “O mankind, fear your Lord.”; “Only the believers, whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned.” And “For whoever fears the standing before his Lord, there are two gardens.” And in the sunnah we find that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Seven will be shaded by Allah on the Day there is no shade except His… one of whom is a man whom a woman of status and beauty invites, he says: ‘I fear Allah.’ And a man remembers Allah privately until his eyes overflow.” Aisha (RA) asked about the verse which states: “Those who give what they give while their hearts are full of fear…” The Prophet ﷺ said: “It is not the one who sins, steals, or drinks. It is the one who prays, fasts, and gives charity, fearing it will not be accepted.” From these verses and hadiths, it is clear that fear of Allah is the foundation of faith. It prevents sin, leads to obedience, and is a reason for entering Paradise. Whoever fears Allah does not forget his oppressed brothers in Gaza; he stands with them in prayer and support, knowing Allah will hold him accountable.
