Here is an excerpt from a trapping seminar I taught in Chicago-land a few moons ago. The focus of the seminar was on functional trapping. Some have asked me, "Isn't trapping functional? If it is, why write 'Functional Trapping' when referring to a seminar on trapping? It's redundant, isn't it?" Here's why I use the word functional in front of trapping... Trapping is functional when it works in a "trapping versus trapping" environment. Outside of this environment, the older trapping methods lack in their effectiveness. I know this from personal experience because I gloved up and tried to use trapping within the boxing environment. It didn't work very well. A couple of things worked here and there, but I ended up eating leather for most of the rounds. This experience led me to explore trapping more before discarding it as "worthless" - like some have within the JKD community. It was through exploration and experimentation that I re-worked the older trapping methods into something that could work within the boxing environment. I know some may be offended by my saying that, so let me say it in another way: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is very functional. Everyone who's been on the mat with a BJJ black belt knows this. However, within the confines (i.e. "the environment") of those who are well trained with a blade (and grappling), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lacks in its effectivensss. It does so because it was not designed for blade work. Yes, I understand that Jiu Jitsu has blade defense techniques within the style. But those techniques are very simple and were designed to be used against someone who doesn't know very much about blade work. Now, all I've done with my trapping was to experiment with it outside of the confines of the trapping versus trapping environment to discover what could work consistently within the boxing environment. What you see on this video is a small excerpt of "Functional Trapping" is a little of trapping that has been designed with the boxer in mind. Enjoy.
