(21 Apr 2014) Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov accused Kiev on Monday of "a crude violation of the agreements reached in Geneva" after a shootout at a checkpoint on Sunday left at least three dead. Lavrov made the comments at a joint news conference in Moscow with visiting Mozambique foreign minister Oldemiro Baloi. "The authorities (in Kiev) aren't doing anything," Lavrov said. "(They) didn't lift a finger to eliminate the causes that are the basis for the deep crisis today in Ukraine." He also countered claims that Russian weapons had been discovered in Ukraine as "a ridiculous argument". "There have never been any other weapons," he said. "Everyone has Russian weapons there." Lavrov then pointed to the appearance of American weapons in Ukraine as shown on a TV show, and noted that if anything was unusual, it was that. The armed clash in eastern Ukraine followed Thursday's announcement in Geneva that talks between Ukraine, Russia, the United States and the European Union had produced an agreement to take tentative steps toward calming the volatile situation. Ukrainian and Russian officials traded accusations of blame for the shootout. The Ukrainian Security Service said the attack was staged by provocateurs from outside the country. Over the past two weeks, more than a dozen government offices in eastern Ukraine have been taken over by pro-Russian forces, replacing the Ukrainian flag with regional or Russian ones.
