On this day in 1872, Dutch painter Piet Mondrian was born. Mondrian began his artistic career painting traditional landscapes in the Netherlands. However, after encountering the revolutionary ideas of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, he moved toward abstraction and geometric form. Living in Paris from 1911, Mondrian developed a distinctive artistic style based on grids, primary colours, and balanced compositions. His work sought to transcend ordinary reality and reflect deeper spiritual harmony — influenced in part by his interest in Theosophy. With the rise of Adolf Hitler, Mondrian left Europe and eventually settled in New York, where he spent the final years of his life. Today his work remains one of the most recognisable forms of modern art. Today's poem is “Sonnet” by Alan Seeger, capturing the rhythms and energy of the modern city — a different kind of modernity from Mondrian’s abstract art. ✨ Today’s reflection: In the noise and distraction of modern life, we can still pause to appreciate beauty, creativity, and the gifts we have received. 📖 Poetry Changes Lives — daily poetry, history, and reflection.
