Robert Plant wrote the lyrics on paper with a pencil over a campfire (supposedly) at Headley Grange, Hampshire. Totally improvising the lyrics. I wonder what was going through his mind? I can imagine the spooky atmosphere of Headley Grange, and the aroma of a campfire there. Again, manager Peter Grant refused to release it as a single because it would hurt the sales of fans purchasing the whole LP. The song debuted at Belfast's Ulster Hall on 5 March 1971. According to John Paul Jones, "They were all bored to tears waiting to hear something they knew." When played live it was when Jimmy Page made the Gibson EDS-1275 double neck guitar famous. It was the guitar of choice used because with its 18 strings it could mimic the overdubbed sections heard on the studio version. John Paul Jones used a Mellotron to replicate the sound of the woodwind instruments he used on the studio recording. Over time Robert Plant refused to sing the song (maybe too sentimental?).
