In this video I go over the basics of how to get tubed backside. The first key, as with all of surfing, is to be able to see what is going to happen before it's going to happen and to prepare for it accordingly. The second key, as with frontside tube riding, is to make sure that you're taking a central line through the tube. It's a goldilocks zone -- not too high and not too low -- and it can be hard to stay in it. In backside tube riding you do, however, have the luxury of the "pig dog" or "3 point stance" that you don't have when you're riding frontside. I go over the basic details of this stance and how you can practice it at home, or, as I suggest, on waves that aren't even tubing, just so you can get a feel for it. The key with "pd" is to pull the back knee in under your body. You don't want it to stick backwards the other way. It looks bad and is not very functional. There is not just one way to "pd" though! There are infinite tiny variations that you'll see when you watch some of the world's best tube riders. Another important thing to remember is to play with it. Or always to play! Practice different ways of dragging your leading hand/arm on the wall and same for your butt and hip and back. This teaches you to trust the wave. Getting backside tubes is an advanced move but you can start on it at both beginner and intermediate levels by just learning the various forms of the pig dog stance. Knowing how to choose a tubing wave is arguably the hardest part and very hard to teach online. But you can at least get the body form down! Let me know how it goes!
