“I wish I didn’t have to walk on eggshells all the time”: The Beliefs and Practices of Physical and Mental Health in Young Adults Who Identify as Transgender or Gender Diverse and Experience Unstable Housing Short Description of Presentation: Almost 40% of young adults who identify as transgender or gender diverse experience housing instability. This population experiences significantly higher rates of anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, violence, and substance abuse. The presentation will discuss the significance of the environment on physical and mental well-being, provide important research study data about the beliefs and practices of physical and mental health for unstably housed young adults who identify as transgender or gender diverse, and discuss practical recommendations for young adults, community members and care providers to support this resilient yet susceptible population. Objectives: At the completion of this presentation, participants will: 1. Understand the nature of housing instability and recognize it as a public health and housing issue 2. Describe why young adults who identify as transgender or gender diverse are more susceptible to housing instability. 3. Recognize the greater physical and mental health concerns this population experience compared to their peers. 4. Understand the relationship between the environment where one lives, goes to school, works, and plays (Social Determinants of Health) on one’s overall health and well-being. 5. Describe study results for the beliefs, values and practices of physical and mental health in young adults who identify as transgender or gender diverse and experience housing instability. 6. Discuss helpful practices to promote physical and mental health in this population. 7. Review what community members and care providers can do to support the physical and mental health of this population.
