In 2022, I had the opportunity to visit the hidden gem of Greece - Chios. Immediately after leaving the island, I learned of a village built on mountain cliffs in the 11th century. The medieval town of Anavatos flourished in the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires until its demise in the 19th century. In 2023, while in Turkiye, I returned to Chios and visited the incredible abandoned village with only one resident remaining.
