Jesus, Agent of Redemption

Text: Colossians 1:18-20 In this sermon from Colossians 1:18–20, we move from Jesus as Lord over Creation to Jesus as Lord of the Church. If all things were created through Him and for Him, then redemption must also come through Him alone. Paul continues the Colossian hymn by declaring that Christ is the head of the body, the church. The church is not a business, not a building, not a brand—it is a body. And the head of that body is not a pastor, not a committee, not the strongest personality—but Christ Himself. Why do we need redemption? Because the Creator has given His law, and we have broken it. We deserve wrath. Yet Jesus, fully God and truly man, entered into time and space to redeem His people. He is the firstborn from the dead, holding first place in all things. Through Him, all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell. Through Him, reconciliation was accomplished. Peace was made by the blood of His cross. Jesus is not becoming preeminent—He already is. The only question is how we will respond: rebellion or reverence.
