Between 16th – 21st October 2023 the second HackYourDistrict Workshop took place at National Taiwan University. Organized by TU Berlin (Department for Work, Technology and Participation) in association with the Alumni Program of TU Berlin and in close cooperation with the Department for Political Science and Department for Civil Engineering at NTU we elaborated how we can use the strength of civic technology in cooperation with the unique Taiwanese civic hack culture to transform and analyze cities on its way to net zero. At the heart of the five-day workshop was a two-day hackathon, in which participants collaborated with the Taiwanese civic hack community to develop tools for the planning and analyze of a contested urban but mainly undeveloped natural space in Taipei, the Guandu Plain. As one of the last remaining urban agricultural areas in Taipei City, the government is stuck in planning, torn between the lure of real estate profits, the demand for affordable housing, and the critical need to safeguard the area's vital ecosystems. By introducing civic tech and open data, the hackathon aims to improve the planning process in the Taipei basin and catalyze the discussion between communities, governments, and urban researchers, especially with the participation of experts. The workshop was supported by the DAAD with funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA).
