Gigue Charles Dieupart (1676-1751) was a French composer who spent most of his life in England. His most important work is probably his set of six harpsichord suites which helped to establish the model also used by Bach. There are scholars like John Butt who claim that Bach knew these pieces and based his English Suites on them, though this is far from certain. The major difference between the Bach and the Dieupart suites is that after the Sarabande, Bach always places a pair of the same type of dance (Gavotte, Minuet, Bourrée) which are played A-B-A where Dieupart has two different kinds of dances before the final Gigue. These suites are originally for harpsichord solo but only a couple of years after their first publication, they appeared in versions for voice flute (a tenor recorder in D) and transposed up for alto recorder. Naturally, either version is playable on transverse flute, violin, or oboe as well.
