Utsyo Chakraborty: Lost in Japan, étude for piano (2025)

Lost in Japan is an étude on independence of the hands, conceived as a gentle return to motion after the monolithic stillness of '34+35'. The pitch material is strictly bifurcated: the right hand plays exclusively on the black keys (G♭–A♭–B♭–D♭–E♭ pentatonic), while the left hand uses only the natural counterparts of those tones (G–A–B–D–E). This separation is a quiet nod to Japanese pentatonic colours. The music unfolds as a two-part canon, the left hand trailing the right by a slight temporal distance. Accents, placed sparingly, produce long-distance phasing effects and micro-asynchronies: shadows of polyrhythm flicker against a continuous legato line. The result is a texture that moves fluidly — a dreamlike drifting, always slightly out of phase with itself. This étude could remind you of Ligeti. And Shawn Mendes.
