The title refers to short liturgical pieces traditionally inserted between verses of chant, and the work is conceived as a sequence of brief musical reflections. Each movement focuses on a particular musical idea: melody (Cantus), repetition (Echo), ground bass (Pedal), ornamentation (Ornament), and finally a reprise of the opening material. In the last movement, the cantus returns in retrograde and gradually fades away. The harmonic language loosely centers around A minor. Different percussion instruments appear in each movement, changing the color of the ensemble from one section to the next. This piece is dedicated to the memory of Bernard Rands, composer extraordinaire, who recently left us. May this short work stand as a small bouquet in his memory. My warmest condolences to Gusty.
