I. The Little Red Ball [00:01] II. Marbles [01:15] III. Bubbles [02:28] IV. The Heavy Book [03:49] V. The Window in the Afternoon [04:55] A few days ago, my father shared a photograph of my brother and me taken twenty-two years ago. I must have been about two and a half; my brother two years older. We are sitting on a wooden frame, our chubby legs dangling, dressed in white sleeveless vests and holding bottles of orange soda that our mother had carefully portioned before we were allowed to drink it. Seeing that image transported me to simpler times, when our daily concerns were limited to waking up, eating, napping, and receiving an abundance of hugs and kisses from our parents, relatives, and neighbours. That single photograph set off a whirlwind of inspiration, prompting me to reflect musically on those early memories. What followed was a set of short piano pieces for young hands: not conceived as pedagogical exercises, but as character pieces inspired by objects, moments, and quiet reflections that a young pianist might enjoy playing as “real” music. The first book of Things Once Known was composed in approximately four hours on February 28, 2026.
