Join us on a journey to discover the most exciting new and established whisky producers and distillers across Japan, and meet the people who are really driving the future of the Japanese whisky industry. As she gets to know the craftspeople of the industry, Kilara is learning the stories of these whisky pioneers to share with the world. The owners of Eigashima White Oak Distillery were producing sake in the beautiful Kobe bay when they were granted the first license to distill whisky in 1919 – but at that point, they didn’t have a distillery! Originally overshadowed by the bigger companies with a larger market share, Eigashima distillery is now regarded as one of the smaller distilleries that produces consistently high quality, and authentic, Japanese whisky. Kilara speaks to Mikio Hiraishi, president of Eigashima Shuzo. Watch the interview to learn: • How Eigashima has held its position in spite of growing competition in the market; • How the spirit is produced by a small team, and draws influence from the environment around it; • How the distillery owners are planning to further integrate local produce into the distilling process; • And how Eigashima distillery is drawing on techniques from traditional Japanese beverage-making to create more complex whisky styles!
