Sometimes an object feels strangely familiar even when it’s more than a century old. In this episode of Stories + 10 Objects , I’m with the wonderful Anna Wheeler looking at a cashmere scarf from around 1897. Up close, the detail is astonishing: silk floss threads, Mughal-inspired designs, leaves and blossoms that are part-real, part-imagined. It feels contemporary but it’s also rooted in a very specific history of Mughal rulers, Persian influences and Indian craftsmanship. What I loved most about filming this was how much it resonated with Anna’s own work. Her knitwear is also built from nature and she embraces irregularity and imperfection instead of hiding it - that’s life! Vintage textiles, age spots, mending and what she calls ‘happy accidents’ in the factory are all part of her story. Two makers, over a century apart, both using pattern to turn nature into something you can wrap around your shoulders. That’s the magic of museums. A big thank you to the wonderful V&A collection assistants who helped bring this object to life, including Louisa Hamereras, Tahmina Shamim, and Dafydd Powell Halls.
